Artfluvia

All of art history on one map

40,000 years of art, music and literature flowing side by side – and every day a work with its story.

The whole map in landscape: 30 colored streams from 40,000 BC to today, with the major works.
Detail of the map from 1700 to 1950: colored streams for Central Europe, Iberia, Near East, South Asia and China, with works such as Goya's paintings and Munch's Scream.
1700 to 1950, all arts. Each color is a region, each line a work.
Like in the app: swipe through 40,000 years, from the caves to today.

Free for iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple TV. No account, no ads, no tracking.

What the app does that the browser can't

In the browser you can see the map and look around. That's enough for a first look. The app does more:

  • Artwork of the Day

One work every day with its picture and story. As a widget on your Home Screen, in StandBy and in the Apple TV Top Shelf.

  • Family quiz

Up to six players, three levels, leaderboards in Game Center. Also as a quiz night on the TV.

  • Kids mode

For ages 6 to 12: four games and the Explorer map. No ads, no links, and a question for parents before any purchase.

  • Classroom mode

The teacher starts the quiz, the kids answer on their own devices on the same network. No account, no internet.

  • Read aloud and listen

Work cards are read aloud, and the tours come as an audio walk. Plus previews for music and readings for literature.

  • Export without watermark

Images up to 4K, A3 and A2 at 300 dpi, posters up to 41 × 122 cm, vector PDF. Preview every format with a watermark first.

  • Screen saver

On Apple TV, iPad and Mac the map drifts slowly through time and spotlights your favorite works.

  • Works offline

The map and preview images are inside the app. Only large images, previews and readings need the internet.

iPhone: work card for Hokusai's Great Wave off Kanagawa with image, year, museum and links, the map's streams behind it. iPhone: family quiz with three players, the question “Who created The Scream?” with Munch's painting and three answers.

From December 1: the Advent calendar. 24 doors in the app, behind each one a work you scratch free. For families: the Weekend Pilot Advent calendar (in German).

Free in the app: the map with all art forms, the Artwork of the Day and its widget, tours, previews and readings. The quiz and the kids' games have five free rounds, after that they come with a one-time purchase, and so does the export. No subscription. One download for iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple TV, purchases work on all of them.

Why Artfluvia exists

For years we've had an old map of world history on the wall at home, the empires flowing side by side as streams. My wife is an art historian, and we love art. Still, it took a trip to the Netherlands and one to the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna before I had the idea: the same thing for art.

Now art hangs on our wall too. The app is easier to read, though. With the poster I always have to bend down to read the last entries (and I probably need varifocals – but that's another story).

Everyone I've shown the app to likes the quiz best, by the way. Just saying.

If you spot a mistake or a work is missing: write to me. The map gets better with every hint.

Who it's for

Families

The quiz at the dinner table or as a quiz night on Apple TV. The little ones play along in kids mode, with the questions read aloud.

Art lovers

See what was made at the same time in Japan, in Italy and in West Africa. Nine tours, “Where is it today?” with museum and city, galleries for 104 artists.

Rather have it on the wall? The stream map comes as a printed poster, ordered straight from the map: artfluvia.com/app/?poster=1 – printed in Europe, shipped to the EU, Switzerland and the UK, from €39 including shipping.

Try the map in your browser. If you like it, get the app.
